During the current COVID-19 Pandemic, qualified pharmacy technicians and State-authorized interns have been granted the authority under the PREP Act to administer an FDA authorized/licensed COVID-19 vaccine to individuals 3 and above and an FDA authorized/licensed ACIP-recommended vaccine to individuals age 3 through 18 under the supervision of a qualified pharmacist. This training will give qualified technicians and State-authorized interns the ACPE approved practical training program needed to satisfy one of the requirements needed to administer vaccinations under the PREP Act, including the COVID-19 vaccine when it is more readily available. In Kentucky, a “qualified” technician must be certified. (Note: This training is approved for pharmacists who need Immunization Training and additional resources as well.)
Objectives
1) Review and understand the purpose of immunization and current gaps in immunization
2) Review the current legislation that provides pharmacy technicians with the authority to provide immunizations
3) Review the requirements of pharmacy technicians to provide immunizations
4) Review the principles of basic immunology and immunity
5) Understand and apply all important information regarding vaccination (types of vaccines, common preventable disease states, vaccination schedules, adverse events, contraindications, etc.)
To complete the skills check-off portion of the program, each participant must have access to a computer or phone with a camera.
